# **Hand clients the keys: self-service permissions and client-led check-ins**

Let motivated clients edit their own workouts, move calendar items, and complete their own check-ins — less day-to-day admin for you, more ownership for them.

**By The Boost Fitness Team**

You didn't get into coaching to spend your evenings nudging a workout by one day or ticking off a check-in someone already told you they'd finished. The best clients want to take the wheel, and every small request they send you is a task on your plate. Today's update hands some of that control back to them, on your terms.

We've added two things that work beautifully together: **self-service permissions** that let you choose what clients can do for themselves, and **client-led check-ins** that clients complete on their own. The result is a lighter admin load for you and a real sense of ownership for the people you coach.

## Choose exactly what clients can do

Every client is different. Some want you to steer every session; others are self-motivated and just want the freedom to adapt. Now you decide how much rope each one gets.

You can allow clients to:

- **Edit their own workouts** — swap an exercise, adjust their sets, or tweak the plan to fit how their body feels that day.
- **Move items around their calendar** — shift a session to a day that actually works, without messaging you first.
- **Add their own activities** — log the extra run, class, or session they fit in around your programme.

These aren't all-or-nothing switches. Give a client the freedom that matches their experience and how much trust you've built together, and keep a tighter rein where it makes sense.

## Set a default, then fine-tune per client

You shouldn't have to configure the same thing over and over. So you can set your preferences once as a **default for everyone**, then **override them for individual clients** whenever you want.

Prefer a hands-on style across the board? Keep things locked down by default and open up access only for the clients who've earned it. Coach a more independent roster? Flip it the other way — set generous defaults and tighten up for the few who need closer guidance.

Either way, you set the tone for your whole client base in moments, and still keep full say over the exceptions. It's the kind of flexible control that scales with you as you take on more people.

## Let clients lead their own check-ins

Check-ins are where the real coaching happens — but chasing them and marking them off is pure admin. Now that step can run itself.

With **client-led check-ins**, you attach a questionnaire to the check-in, and when your client submits it, the check-in is **marked done automatically**. No back-and-forth, no manual ticking, no wondering whether they actually got round to it. Their answers land with you, the check-in closes itself, and you get to spend your time on the response that matters, not the reminder that doesn't.

If you're already building questionnaires for your clients, this slots right in. Our [**onboarding and check-in forms**](https://boostfitness.io/blog/client-onboarding-forms-questionnaires) let you create the questions once and reuse them, so a client-led check-in is just a form doing double duty.

## Why this makes you a better coach

Handing over the right controls isn't about doing less coaching — it's about spending your energy where it counts.

- **Less day-to-day admin.** The small stuff — moving a session, logging an extra activity, closing a completed check-in — no longer routes through your inbox.
- **More ownership for clients.** People who take an active hand in their own plan tend to stick with it. Autonomy builds accountability.
- **Coaching that fits the person.** Give independent clients room to run and keep newer ones close, all from the same set of tools.

### Key takeaways

- Choose what each client can do: edit workouts, move calendar items, and add their own activities.
- Set a default for everyone, then override it for individual clients.
- Attach a questionnaire to a check-in and let clients complete it themselves — it's marked done the moment they submit.
- Net result: less admin for you, more ownership for motivated clients.
